[89 Wine Advocate] From the sandy soils of a Contra Costa vineyard planted in the 1890s, the 2013 Proprietary Red Evangelho Heritage is composed of 60% Zinfandel, 18% Carignane and the rest Mourvdre, Palomino and Mission. It exhibits dusty, loamy soil undertones intermixed with underbrush, ripe berry fruit, pepper, earth and spicy notes. This interesting, terroir-driven, medium to full-bodied wine shows good fruit as well as a touch of rusticity. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.Evangelho Vineyard: Own-rooted on forty-foot-deep banks of beach sand alongside the Sacramento River Delta, Evangelho is a totally unique site. Planted in the 1890s, the vineyard is a viticultural survivorwedged between a PG&E plant, a Burger King, and a motel that rents rooms by the hour. A field-blend of Zinfandel, Carignane, Mourvedre, and others, the wines are fresh, bright, and typically have some of the lowest pHs of any of the Bedrock wines.
